North East Trophy Youth Results

February 29th, 2012

Sorry for the late posting of these results.

It was great to see so many young riders take part in this years event, a huge increase in numbers which is again great for North East Cycling. Some young stars in the making no doubt!

We had 68 Youth racers across all the age groups which for February is truly impressive! A big thanks to Kevin Kilkullen of the Stockton Wheelers and Alex Mclean who ran the Youth events for us this year. Their hard work throughout the year is clearly paying off with some great racing from this excellent turn out!

Velo29 North East Trophy - Results and Round Up

February 26th, 2012

Local Black Hawk rider Craig Anderson was a surprise but worthy winner of Saturday’s Velo29 North East Trophy.

The winning break of 4 riders including defending champion Matt Kipling, now with Velo29 Elite Racing Team, Herbal life riders Kit Gillham and Tom Bustard and of course event winner Craig Anderson broke free after 10 laps. All 4 handicap groups had just come together, a natural time to attack and spice up the racing!

The move was started by Matt Kipling with some very aggressive riding. Kit and Tom were soon on his wheel with Craig taking a little longer to react but riding strongly to get involved. “It was a huge field and dangerous in the bends, I wanted to split things up as soon is it all came together” Matt quoted after the race.

The 4 riders, all hard workers soon opened a big gap and the field behind was strung to pieces! Lots of move’s followed but is was a group of 5 including Velo29 riders Alex Bottemley and Anthony Moye who made the next significant attack.

This group of 5 worked hard in the rising wind to close the gap on the Kipling group but it wasn’t until the last lap that they really made a significant impact.

However, the 4 were never going to be caught and with 1 lap to go the Herbal Life pair started to put the famous “1 – 2” on favourite Matt. The Velo29 rider had to follow every move, Gillham and Bustard were unable to shake him but all the time, Matt was using vital energy. Anderson played a very clever race and as underdog, simply followed the other 3.

With 400m to go, Kit opened the sprint, Matt reacted and came past Kit with Craig on his wheel. Bustard was out of the running, and as Matt pasted kit with 200m to go Anderson was still on his wheel. We thought Matt would retain his crown but it wasn’t to be and 100m from the line, Craig galloped past to win by 2 bike lengths.

The win was obviously sweet to Craig, his first major result and as he crossed the line, shouting with joy, it was clear what the victory meant to him.

A worthy winner of the 2nd running of this great event. There were 148 riders taking part, all abilities from Elite down to new comers, converting to racing through the popular Velo29 Winter Series.

We are back in the Summer with the Stockton Cycling Festival which this year includes the National Crit Series and the Premier Calendar!

Thanks for all the support in the this year’s events.

Velo29 Winter Series Round 4

February 19th, 2012

More great racing and a huge turnout for the last round of the Velo29 Winter Series.

After the disappointment of cancelling Round 3 due to ice on the circuit, Velo29 Events were back with some sunshine, dry conditions and despite a stiff breeze, a good temperature for the final round of the 2012 Velo29 Winter Series.

130 riders took part across the 2 events, a record for the Winter Series and possibly North East Racing!

The 4th Cat/ Go-race event got under way on time with a field of 75 riders split across 2 groups. The Go-Race riders were given 1 minute handicap. It was a sizeable group of around 15, great to see so many new people taking to Racing. The huge 4th Cat group, working well together caught them quite quickly and the lap times over the 9 lap race were pretty impressive for the time of year.

Black Hawk rider David Charman, looking lean and on form took the 5 lap prime, sprinting quite comfortable ahead of the big bunch.

Various attempts to get away were made but the race was decided by a bunch sprint. In fact, the top 10 were so close we had to spend quite some time checking the photo finish to be sure of the correct order!

In the end it was Struan Mcinnes of RST racing who brought home the bunch ahead of Samuel Bennet and Paul Rymer in 3rd place. Velo29 events regular Ruari Grant just pipped Sunderland Clarion rider Stuart Neilson for 4th.

We really hope the new riders who have joined the Sport this Winter stick at it and find their feet in the Sport. We’ve meet some great people and seen some impressive racing from loads of new faces. It’s a huge part of what Velo29 Events are about.

Immediately after the prize presentation, the E/1/2/3/4 race was under way, no time to rest for the 4th Cat’s doing both races! We split the field into 3 groups, 4th Cats, 3rd Cats and the everyone else. There were no Elite’s and only 4 1st Cats so it seemed a little harsh to set them off alone. Things will be different at the North East Trophy!

Despite the rising wind, which usually slows the less experienced riders the 3rd cat group was making an impressive pace! Once they caught the 4th Cat group, a very sneaky move of 3 riders realised the scratch group were making little progress and nipped off the front.

The gap grew rapidly and in fact, despite dropping in numbers as the race went on it was finally John Cann of Infinity Cycles, instigator of this bold move who smoothly pedalled home in 1st place ahead of Team Mate, Andy Beattie.

Ex Velo29 rider, Harry Tanfield brought the Peleton home in 3rd place ahead of Will Haynes, now with Black Hawk Bikes. Ever present Levi Moody, despite spending much of the race in small breaks still had energy left for 5th place.

The participation in this years’ Winter Series has been tremendous and we are very grateful to all the riders, some who have travelled miles to take part in the Velo29 Events. We were gutted to cancel a round and even our brave attempts to chip the ice with a spade were not going to allow us to race!

The 25th Feb is the North East Trophy, one of the biggest events in the North. We really hope you join us for this, as a rider or spectator. We have some of the best riders in the Nation coming to race on the Croft Circuit, it will be a wonderful event.

Velo29 Winter Series Round 1 Results

January 29th, 2012

Results and Round Up From the First Race Of 2012.

Velo29 Winter Series Round 1, Croft, 28th January 2012.

The 2012 Road season opened today with the Velo29 Winter Series at Croft Motor Racing Circuit. Last year was the first running of this popular event and we expected good numbers today but we were all blown away by the massive 113 competitors who turned out to enjoy the Velo29 Event.

Lots of work goes into making Velo29 Events a success and we delighted with the attendance today, a huge thank you to everyone who turned up and made the event such a success!

Racing got underway at 11:30 with the 4th Cat/ Go-Race event and an amazing 74 riders took to the line in 2 groups, Go-race off first with a 45 second handicap over the 4th cat riders. To my knowledge this is one of the biggest 4th cat/ Go-Race fields in ever seen in North East racing!

Despite many first timers in the bunch the good conditions made the racing fast with some spirited attacks from the gun. There was never to be any catching of young Levi Moody from Pedal Sport Cycling Club who spent the majority of the race in front alone with a brave and impressive ride to romp home with a huge advantage over the chasing bunch.

Matt Rossiter of Durham Uni brought the bunch home ahead of Carl Donaldson in 3rd place. It was great to see so many first timers taking to racing and we really do hope you enjoyed the event and will make it back to the next 2 races.

After a quick prize presentation the E/1/2/3/4 race was underway, again an impressive size field made even bigger by the 4th cat’s taking the opportunity to ride both events for 1 entry fee.

We set the riders off in 3 groups, 4th cats, then 3rd cats then finally 1st & 2nd. No elites were present today. The race came together on lap 5 with an attack launched immediately from Velo29 Elite Team rider Jack Rees. Another 4 riders joined Jack and this was to be the winning move. Despite a number of aggressive attacks and some counter moves by Velo29 Team Mates, the Rees bunch was never going to be caught.

Jack controlled the small break well and with 200m to go jumped clear to cross the line, arms in the air to claim Velo29′s first victory of the season. Michael Sloanes of Sunderland Clarion crossed the line in 2nd, closely followed by Ryan Fenwick of Gala CC.

A great start to the 2012 season, an amazing turn out and loads of new riders to the sport.

There are 2 more Winter Series events on 11th & 18th Feb followed by the prestigious North East Trophy on the 25th. All events are at Croft and can be entered via the velo29.com web site.

Thank you all, riders, spectators and our loyal helpers for you contributions to opening the season in such style.

Hope to see you all and more on the 11th Feb.

We will be posting images and videos which can be located via the www.velo29.com web site, please check back over the next few days for updates. Full results below.

Velo29 Signs Top North East Rider Matt Kipling

December 9th, 2011

The North East’s Velo29 Cycling Team has signed North East Elite Matt Kipling from Raleigh for 2012. Formerly of Team Raleigh and earlier Pinarello, Matt joins Velo29 as the Team Leader for the 2012 road season. “This is a huge signing for the northern team and a massive step towards their long term goal of success in the Premier Calendar and Major UK road events” says the team.

“Matt’s pedigree cannot be questioned. With a decade of performing at the highest level in the biggest teams, Matt can sprint, climb and is a real contender in any race he enters.”

The Velo29 Elite Team, sponsored by Velo29 Online Bike Shop and Vankru Performance Cycling, has been on the scene for three years now and have grown rapidly in this time. The team have a great ethos and though very focused, they really work to enjoy their racing. Despite the French name, the routes hail very much from the North East of England.

Richard Williamson, Velo29 Sporting Director adds’ “Matt joining the team is a credit to how far we have already come and a sign of our real ambition for years ahead. This is an important move for both team and rider. It’s great that Matt has been able to sign for a local team and shares very much our ambition to take on the big players in the UK. Velo29 is an ever growing team and success is coming fast. With the rest of the already very strong team behind Matt, 2012 will without a doubt be our and Matt’s best year so far. We did the deal on Friday, this was a really proud day for us and a huge step, the racing season can’t come fast enough!”

Velo29 Winter Series Round 2 Results

February 8th, 2011

Saturday 5th Feb saw another great attendance and some exciting racing at Croft for the second round of the Velo29 Winter Series.

Numbers were up on round 1 which is great news and encourages us the formula is working.

The 4th/ Go-Race set off to a brisk pace, much faster than last week, the first 4 laps being covered in under 20 minutes, not far off the pace of the scratch riders!

Attacks went from the gun but with a Prime on offer after 4 laps, the groups were kept together by riders chasing the cash prize. Jon Hopkinson took the prime, the first of 3 prizes for Jon today!

The pace remained high and the riders crossed the line in 10 minutes less than round one, impressive stuff!

Jon Hopkinson (Aire Valley Wheelers) brought the field home ahead of Dan Warwick (Active Cycles) and in 3rd place Mike Smart of Velo29. This was Mike’s 2nd ever event and he’s showing much promise for the future.

The E/1/2/3/4 race was shortly underway, with a rising wind the stronger Scratch riders quickly gained pace on the handicap groups.

The groups came together after 7 laps, quite a contrast to round 1 where the Elite riders never saw the front of the race.

Immediately the attacks started. A group of 11 select riders gained an advantage which quickly grew to over 30 seconds. The race was over for the chasing pack.

Not content with the size of the group, attacks were frequent and the 11 were soon reduced to 6. Dan Smith of Velo29 made valiant efforts but was unable to open a clear advantage.

Finally, a group of six thundered over the line. Giles Harrison of active cycles just pipped last weeks winner Harry Tanfield followed closely by Jon Hopkinson completing his impressive hattrick of prizes!

A big thanks for everyone who turned up, we really appreciate your participation.

Don’t forget next week is cancelled due to local restrictions but we’ll be back on the 19th for the final round.

The 26th of February is the North East Trophy, with a £500 prize list it’s filling up fast so please call/ email/ post an entry to be sure of a place!

Velo29 Winter Series 1 – January 29th

February 1st, 2011
A big thank you to everyone who turned up at Croft on Saturday morning to make the first ever Velo29 Winter Series Race such a success.

Over 70 riders took to the circuit in two races.  The weather, though cold was as good as we could have hoped. Bright sunshine, little wind and dry tarmac. Great conditions to open the road season!

Racing got underway at 11:30 for the 4th/ Go-Race categories. With breaks going on the first lap the tempo was high. A lot of the field had never raced before but they all soon grouped together.   The racing was safe and fun.

Ed Garrett eventually brought the field home to receive flowers on the podium along with Jon Stokes in 2nd and Mark Hancock in 3rd place.

The handicapped E/1/2/3/4 race got underway shortly after. Many of the 4th Cat’s had taken advantage of the offer of entering a 2nd race for only £7. With 2 minute gaps between each of the 3 groups and some very hard work by some strong 3rd Cats, the Elite/1/2 riders didn’t quite catch the handicapped group. Despite big efforts from the group and a strong solo effort by ex Velo29 rider Richard Meadows, the E/1/2 rides were left to pick up the “also-ran” places.

Harry Tanfield (ex Velo29) brought the sprint home ahead of Tom Timothy (Velo29) and riding his first road race, tri-athlete Tom Bustard came in an impressive 3rd, despite spending the majority of the last 3 laps sat on the front holding off the chasing scratch riders!

Well done to everyone who took part, we hope to see you all there again next week for some more great early season racing.

Don’t forget, the 12th Feb event has been cancelled due to local noise restrictions.

New Premier Calendar Team for 2011

November 28th, 2010

Story posted November 25, 2010 on British Cycling Website | Team Press Release

North East based racing Team Velo29 have put together a new Premier Calendar Squad for the 2011 season. Velo29, sponsored by online bike store www.velo29.com have been around for a few seasons and are now ready to move into the top echelons of UK cycling.

“We are very ambitious about what we can achieve at Velo29″ comments Team Chairman Richard Williamson. “The structure has been put in place over the past few seasons and we are now ready to take on some of the big UK outfits. We’ve got a feeder team developing local talent, plenty of contacts to bring in experienced riders and have all the support in place that a Premier Calendar Team warrants”.

“The budget’s not huge but the finance is secured for the foreseeable future therefore the riders can take some assurance from this and concentrate on the pedalling” Richard adds. “We look after our riders and we see a long term plan essential to achieving this. Riders need support and security. They need to know we’ll attend every big race and they will have the backing they need to be able to succeed.”

“We want our riders to do well and have ambition. If that’s sticking with Velo29 then great but if they want to move to a bigger team or abroad then we’ll help them do this. We’ve got plenty of contacts on the Continent and further afield who can help us achieve this. Already we have two former Velo29 riders doing well in Brittany and it’s great to see riders develop and move on.”

“We get invites to some pretty cool places” add’s Team Manger Daniel Smith. “I’ve taken Teams to Cameroon, Senegal and Eastern Europe in the past few years. We’ve got cycling contacts in pretty much every corner of the globe! The Team Launch is in February 2011″ adds Daniel. “In terms of the squad, we are pretty much where we want to be. We’ve got some new signing’s, seasoned Continentals and importantly organic talent. There is still place for another two squad members and we’d be delighted to hear from interested parties to fill these spots.”
